ROSEMONT, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves surrendered two third-period goals to the San Antonio Rampage and dropped their fourth straight game 2-1 Wednesday night at the Allstate Arena.
Defenseman Yann Sauve scored the lone tally for Chicago, which has scored just one marker in its last 150 minutes, 30 seconds stretching over the last three games.
“We have had our struggles in the third and it cost us once again,” said Wolves head coach Craig MacTavish. “We need to correct this trend in a hurry.”
Chicago (30-21-2-3) held a 1-0 lead entering the third period, but San Antonio (31-23-2-1) scored twice in a 4:26 span to grab the victory. The Rampage tied the score 1-1 while on the power play at 3:45 of the final frame.
Center Bracken Kearns skated the puck below the near circle and slipped a backhand pass through the crease where forward Greg Rallo was streaking in back-door and one-timed a shot home past Wolves netminder Eddie Lack.
The Rampage grabbed the game-winner at 8:11 when center Scott Timmins won a puck battle behind the Wolves net and sent the puck around to the near post, where defenseman Nolan Yonkman flicked a wrister that snuck through the legs of Lack.
Lack (14-15-3) stopped 30 shots.
Chicago opened scoring at 8:36 of the second period when Sauve held the puck at the far point, faked a shot to clear the defenseman and then stepped into a wrister that sailed past San Antonio goaltender Jacob Markstrom.
Markstrom (8-8-0) earned 27 saves in the win.
The Wolves travel to Wisconsin for an Amtrak Rivalry matchup against the Milwaukee Admirals at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
